Neil Demonstrates the Draper 40407 Wind-Up LED Head Torch

Neil was worried he looked like a bit of a plonker in this video, but we all reassured him he didn’t….
Click for more info on the Draper 40407 wind-up LED head torch.
Features:
* Adjustable head positioning straps with foam pad to prevent chafing to the forehead
* Suitable for hands-free work in dark areas
* Separate, detachable power unit, which by winding for one minute, gives approx. 20 minutes of bright light between windings.

Dennis of Draper comments on these torches on our latest podcast. He rightly points out that the concept of wind up torches sorts out several problems with battery powered torches. In particular losing your batteries, the batteries running out or the batteries leaking and ruining the torch.

All in all, the wind-up torch idea is a great problem solver and the Draper 40407 comes in at a good price-point.

Telesteps Telescopic Ladders – Good?

Slightly off power tools for a wee while, I wanted to find out what the opinion was on Telesteps ladders.

These are quite ingenious ladders which can be easily carried or transported, they’re really lightweight and yet will quickly extend to 3.8 metres high becaise of the telescopic mechanism.  They’re made in Sweden so should have the usual Swedish quality traits.

There is also a loft ladder version which works with the same telescopic principle so takes up very little space in your attic area.

I wanted to get some feedback from people who are using these ladders.  Are they as robust and hardwearing as a conventional ladder, is the mechanism easily mastered?  Are there any other comments you would make?

Black & Decker Share Price Rises 6%

I was reading this article with interest.  Black & Decker (who were recently taken over by Stanley Works) are riding the storm in these very difficult economic times.  Although they warned of continued construction slowdown due to unemployment and limited need for office blocks, shopping centres and warehouses etc it is clear that the great products they have developed are keeping them afloat and ahead of the game.

Black & Deckers brands include the Black & Decker DIY range of power tools, garden tools, automotive tools and dustbusters.  They also include the industrial Dewalt range of power tools.  I think this has stood them in good stead as they reach across the whole spectrum of consumers.

With a slight uncertainty about where this company will head after the Stanley takeover, it is right that the analysts are slightly conservative with their projections.

Toolstop continues to see growth in all sectors of power tools through the ecommerce website across all brands.

What are your experiences?  How long before we pull out of the recession and start building stuff again?

5 Household Tools You Can’t Do Without

Great article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

No homeowner or renter should be without the following items because they make everyday tasks simple.

Don’t get your dander up: Every household should have at least one lint brush. We think the double-sided Evercare Magik brush available at most drugstores (suggested retail price $4.21) is just fine.

Lend me a hand: Tight jar lids can be problematic for even the strongest hands. Gripper Pads, a set of four no-slip rubber disks for $3.25 at amazon.com, work great and are easy to store.

No plug needed: Every household needs at least one power tool. Your best bet is a cordless drill with multiple attachments. This can be used for everything from installing switch plate covers to stirring cans of paint. Last year Popular Mechanics tested 10 cordless drills; overall, the magazine liked the Makita 18V BHP454 ($329) best.

Getting it straight: From hanging pictures to shimming up furniture, a level can be your best friend. We suggest a 2-foot traditional bubble level for most common home-improvement jobs. Home Depot sells a 24-inch professional box level for $34.96. There are also laser levels, which illuminate a plumb line on the working surface with even more accuracy than bubble levels. These can typically be used for bigger jobs such as laying tile, installing countertops or hanging wallpaper; they tend to be a bit pricier than their bubble counterparts.

Size it up: Every home should have a couple of tape measures. They’re more compact than a ruler or yardstick. Use one for everything from sewing projects to shopping for the perfect flea market find to fit in a tight corner. We suggest getting one 25 feet or longer and 1 inch wide for ease of use.

Janice Huntley: She knew her way around a tool box

If you wanted to buy a gift for Janice Huntley, chocolates and flowers were OK, and she’d thank you for them.

But if you really wanted this tool-totin’ gal to go gaga, you’d put a bow on a chop saw, a 3/8-inch drill or an orbital sander. Just make sure it’s a DeWalt.

“She kept wanting bigger and bigger power tools,” her life partner, Larry Chase, said. “And she always named them — John DeWalt, Eddie DeWalt.”

Huntley died Tuesday, Jan. 19, of complications from cancer. She was 54.
