Bosch GCM 12 SDE Sliding Mitre Saw - Spec, Feature and Benefits

bosch gcm12sde review
There are times when only a 12" sliding mitre saw will do. Jobs that require you to cut huge pieces of materials quickly. Jobs that require you to mitre or bevel big pieces of wood. Quickly. And accuratley.

It's for occasions like these where having a saw like Bosch's GCM 12 SDE is your only option.

In this article, we'll look at the spec, the features and the benefits of the of the GCM 12 SDE, and we asked Eric from Bosch to give us a walkthrough, which you can watch here on Toolstop TV.

Bosch GCM 12 SDE - What Are the Cutting Capacities - SHOP HERE

The key spec of any saw is the capacity of cut it offers you. And the GCM 12 SD E is right up there in terms of capacity.

bosch gcm12sde cutting
With the bevel set at 0it will slice through material that's 120mm thick and 400mm wide. The saw benefits from extendable material supports, so it will easily deal with wide, long pieces of wooden sheeting, for example.

Mitre the saw to  45 and it will slice through material that's  90mm thick and 205mm wide, and if you bevel (right or left) to 45 the capacity of cut is 38mm thick and 370mm wide.

Bosch GCM 12 SDE - What Size Blade Does it Take - SHOP HERE

Supplied with the saw is a 72 tooth blade with a 305mm diameter. The blade fitting system is fanastic as it's Bosch's tool-free SDS platform. No tools required to change the blade, just hold in the spindle lock and turn the locking wheel to release the blade from the 30mm bore.

In order to make the big cuts outlined above, Bosch has re-imagined the drive mechanism. A belt drives the motor, which in turn switches to a chain drive through to the spindle. This results in a very low profile gear box, allowing for the big capacity cuts without the saws mechanism getting in the way.

Bosch GCM 12 SDE - How to Set it Up - SHOP HERE

First off, the saw can be mounted on a leg stand, such as the Bosch GTA 2600. From there, set up is straight forward.

Any lever or switch on the saw that's red is there to be adjusted, from the side-mounted bevel lever to the head lock on top. Setting up trench cuts is a doddle, as seen in our video demo. The red capped lever on the right of the saw can be flipped out, which activates the stop. Set the depth by adjusting the red capped thread, and you're good to go.

You can then flip the lever back into position when you're finished and resume normal cuts.

At the back of the saw is a turret which is preset with the "popular" bevel angles. This is a quick and easy way to make bevel cuts, either right or left. Choose the angle on the turret and the bevel will stop at exactly that angle for your cut. Again, you can see this demonstrated in our video.

Bosch GCM 12 SDE - Other Benefits - SHOP HERE

The saw is equipped with a variable speed dial (Electronic Speed Control), which is unsual on a mitre saw. However, this gives you the ability to dial in the speed for the type of cut you're making or the material you're working with. It gives you the chance to dial back the speed of the blade when required, such as when cutting hard woods or composites, or even non-ferrous metals.

Dust extraction is paramount, especially when you're cutting man-made materials. The saw has a huge dust collection chute right behind the blade and any good quality dust extractor can be attached to the  saw via the port.

And finally, the laser can be activitated via a switch on top of the machine. It creates two lines either side of the blade's kerf, showing you exactly where the cut will be.

All in all, this is a monster of a saw, both in terms of features and cutting capacity, but it's still compact enough to be truly portable.
