Chicago Pneumatic CP9780 - the Best Compact Belt Sander?

The ability to sand in awkward spaces is essential for many workshops, particularly when the applications involve working on cars and a grinder just won't do the job well.

For example, what's the best way to remove paint or rust from in behind a wheel arch? A belt sander with a flexible head, of course!

Chicago Pneumatic make some of the best air tools in the world, and while the brand may be most closely associated with impact wrenches and drills, they do in fact have a whole stable of air tools, and the CP9870 offers you the ability to work in the tightest of spaces, with loads of power and flexibility.

We asked Carl from Beetlebank, an award winning VW restoration workshop, to share his thoughts on why he trusts the CP9780 heavy duty belt sander. Watch his video on Toolstop TV.

As Carl explains, he often uses a belt sander rather than a grinder to get a smooth, flat surface in tight spaces. As he says, grinders are fine for many workshop applications, but oftentimes a belt sander does the job much better.

Rotating at a staggering 20,000rpm, you know you're getting loads of stock-removing capability right there in your hand with the CP9780. Then factor in that those rotations are turning a sanding belt that's just 20mm wide, and you know you'll be able to quickly and efficiently get into awkward to reach places.

The sanding head is fully adjustable, so you'll be locking off the head at the angle that's right to get the job done, and even the air line swivels around, meaning the ergonomics are fantastic, especially when paired with the rubber molded grip. Set it up the way you need it, power it on and smooth off those welds with almost fingertip-like control, with less finishing and filling work required afterwards.

In terms of how it performs on your airline, here's the spec

  • Average air consumption: 15 cfm
  • Actual air consumption: 30 cfm 849 l/mn
  • Free speed air consumption: 14.6 cfm
  • Min. hose size: 3/8" 10 mm
  • Air inlet thread size: 0.25 "

And it comes supplied with 80 and 120 grit sanding belts.

When experts like Carl sing the praises of using a belt sander it's time to sit up and pay attention. You can add the CP9780 heavy duty belt sander to your air line kit here.
