Dust Kills - Act Now With V-TUF Dust Control

It's no secret that the product of all that drilling and cutting - dust - is a killer. For years it was ignored, we relied on sweeping up the mess afterwards, creating more fine partical dust in the process.

Here's some facts.

In the UK every year:

  • there are 110 fresh cases of dust-related skin disease
  • 177 fresh cases of occupational asthma
  • 500 construction workers die from silica dust
  • 1300 die from occupational lung disease and cancer
  • 8000 die from dust-related illness
  • 1.1 billion lost on workplace injury and poor health in the construction industry

Nowadays the Health and Safety Executive has laid out clear guidelines for how we deal with dust during and after we work, and these guidelines need to be followed if we want to protect our health, the health of those around us, and avoid any potential legal action against us!

We've written about the dangers of concrete dust and the way some power tool manufacturers are helping us deal with it, but what about the general dust created while we work, and the even finer dust particals created when we sweep up after work?

That's where a dust extractor and a heavy duty vacuum cleaner with the proper M-class filter comes in. And to help us with that, we're delighted to be stocking V-TUF dust extractors and vacuum cleaners.

Watch their video on why you need a top-of-the-range vacuum cleaner.

What Exactly Is M-Class?

This is an important question to answer. The "M" refers to the classification of the filter fitted within a dust extractor or vacuum cleaner. To receive this certification it must be able to filter out 99.9% of all dust, including that really fine dust created when cutting wood.

For example, the workplace exposure limit for silica dust (the dust created when working on sandstone, concrete and mortar) is is 0.1 mg/m3 when averaged over 8 hours. If you rely on just sweeping up such dust, you'll quickly produce high peak exposures of around 1-2 mg/m3.

Therefore, using an M-Class dust extractor attached to the tools where possible is best, as is using adequate face masks. But relying on an M-Class vacuum cleaner to clean up after you is 100% preferable to simply sweeping the dust up, because you're creating more fine particals in process!

The V-TUF M-Class vacuums and extractors are certified as such because:

  • they have sufficient air velocity to extract, transport and
    collect dust
  • they have sufficient filtration to ensure that you don’t
pump dangerous dust back into the air
  • they have a safe waste disposal method
  • they have a clear method of notifying the user when
the air flow drops below 20 metres per second
  • they have an airtight air-channel to ensure that
contaminated air does not bypass the filter. This
includes no holes in the filter and a total air-tight seal
  • they have a dust bag with a ‘shut off’ tap. This provides
safe collection and easy disposal of bulk waste

The V-TUF products tick off of these essential health and safety boxes.

Dust control is no joke; it could be a matter of life or death. So let us know your thoughts on these dust control tools and how you make sure you're safe at work.
