Gas Nailer Safety and Choosing the Right Nail and Shank

Gas nailers have been commonplace on construction sites in recent years. Paslode led the way but many other manufacturers have released their own versions in recent times and we have put together the video below with the help of Makita to show safe and proper use of a gas nailer.

Many of the Toolstop customers ask us what nails to use in their nailers for the different applications and conditions.

We've put a handy table below to explain:

Type of nail

Explanation
Smooth Bright Good for use on internal jobs where there is no or very little exposure to moisture. Use on non permanent work such as shuttering
Galvanised The most popular as it gives good protection against corrosion and can be used for most applications
Hot Dipped Galvanised Recommended for use on external work or where corrosion could damage the finish or integrity of the joint

Here is also a table which guides you in choosing the right shank for the job:

Type of shank

Explanation
Smooth The most common nail, it can be used for most joints
Ring Identified by the rings around the shaft, these nails are generally used where a very strong joint is required
Unilock A cross between Smooth and Ring types, for use where a medium strength joint is required
