Hammer Drills - How to Use Them Safely
Posted by Mark Hunter - September 03, 2013
Your safety habits when using power tools are vitally important, not only for your personal health and safety, but for those around you.
In this Toolstop University guide, thanks to Eric Streuli at Bosch, we'll discuss how to safely use a hammer drill.
The key element in this guide is the proper use of the auxiliary handle. It was provided with your SDS hammer drill for a reason, so here's how to use it properly.
There's always a potential risk of your drill bit suddenly jamming when in use, despite the drill's safety clutch. This will lock up the bit, introducing the danger of the drill itself spinning out of your grip.
This is where the proper placement of the auxilliary handle comes in.
As Eric points out in our safety video below, just because your drill came out of the manufacturer's box with the auxilliary handle as shown below (and oftentimes this is how its displayed in demo photos!), doesn't mean this is the safest way to use it.
Watch Eric explain how to best position in the handle in our Toolstop University video below.
