How to Fit D Handles and Push Plates to a Door

Step 1

Measure the distance between the threads of the D handle and mark this onto the door, using a combination square to transfer this to the other side of the door. The mark the distance in from the edge of the door where you want your D handle to start.

Step 2

Fit a spade bit into your drill driver and drill at the above marked point just a few millimetres into the door to allow the screw head to be countersunk. Your drill driver should be set to rotary only and Gear/Speed 2.

Step 3

Fit a 3mm bit to your drill driver and pilot drill the door from both sides. Switch up to a 10mm bit to drill through the door for the D handle's bolts. Remember, have the drill driver in rotrary mode only.

Step 4

Insert the bolt through the hole and hand tighten into the D handle.

Step 5

Fit a Pozi bit, switch to gear 1 with a torque setting of 4 and in gear 1, tighten the bolt into the D handle.

Step 6

Place the push plate against the door (the bolt should be nicely countersunk and meaning the push plate will sit flush over it) and mark it centre. Mark the first of the 4 holes, then using your 3mm bit drill a pilot hole, as above.

Step 7

Switch back to your Pozi bit and drill the first screw into the push plate's hole. Repeat this for the other 3 screws with your drill driver in torque setting 4, gear 1. While doing so, use the combination square to make sure the D handle is nice and straight.

Step 8

Stand back and admire your work, before retiring for a cup of tea.
