Makita JR103D & JR105D CXT Recip Saws - Spec, Features, Benefits

2016 saw Makita launch a signifcant upgrade to its popular 10.8v range of cordless power tools. In imitation of the LXT 18v range, the Japanese firm created new slide-on batteries, entering the game at 2Ah of capacity with the option of upgrading to 4Ah packs.

The range of tools available in the new Compact eXtreme Technology range (see them all here) is growing already, including the introduction of two new recip saws. In this guide we'll take you through the specs, features and benefits, broken down into 4 handy chuncks.

#1 - Variety is the Spice of Life

As noted, there's two versions available. Both are packaged with either two 2Ah packs or body-only. However, the JR105D has a grub screw fitment for the blade which means you have the option of fitting jigsaw blades into it. This gives you a little bit more option when cutting, allowing you to easily perform a plunge cut for example.

#2 - Ergonomics All the Way

Both saws mirror the body first seen in the JR100 and JR102, so there isn't a significant upgrade to the style of the body. The 2 switch trigger set up gives you a choice of grip positions making the saws excellent - once again - in any operation. Just choose to power on via the trigger or the paddle.

And of course, Makita's comfortable rubberised overmolding is present, making the saws comfy to hold in the hand all day long.

#3 - Better Battery Performance

The older 10.8v cordless tools were popular for a reason. Inexpensive, compact, durable. And now with the new CXT packs, we're seeing the potential for significant improvement. That's due to the better quality contacts found in the CXT batteries, providing a more robust and efficient connection between the battery and the switch. This allows for improved transference of power from the battery to the motor. And of course, they're starting at 2Ah, so you'll have longer runtimes into the bargain.

And then there's the "to-be-expected" battery protection, individual cell monitoring and now a 4-stage LED fuel indicator, making the CXT tools more reliable and more durable.

#4 - Lots of Capacity

For such small recip saws, there's plenty of capacity to play around with. Whether you're cutting through strapping up to 50mm thick or pipe with a diameter of 50mm, both saws will handle it with ease. That's in part due to the 13mm stroke length, but also the 3,300 strokes per minute available via the variable speed trigger.

For anyone ready to upgrade their 10.8v recip saw, or perhaps venture into this voltage space, we reckon the new JR10* CXT recips saws from Makita are well worthy of consideration. What's your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

It is really smart to have a LED fuel indicator, so you can prepare your tool well for the next job.
