DeWALT DCS355 Brushless Cordless Oscillating Tool REVIEWED

DeWALT, once again, is upping the power tool stakes in 2014 launching yet another new multi/oscillating tool.

Just as we saw last year with the arrival of the DWE315 (read our review here) in 2013, it wasn’t with huge surprise that we wandered into their demo room just north of Glasgow to see the DSC355 sitting in all its brushless, cordless glory.

It’s hard to think of another reaction to have to this particular oscillating tool, regardless of your current power tool allegiance. It looks fantastic. From the slim grip with paddle-type switch, to the way to perfectly balances atop the XR li-ion battery, all the way up to the inclusion of it’s corded big brother’s depth stop and LED job light, the DCS355 is a joy to behold.

And hold it we did.

DeWALT had assembled a few other oscillating tools from competitors for observers to get a sense of the balance and ergonomics of the new cordless tool. And we have to admit, DeWALT’s designers have done a great job in putting together a tool that offers power and control into one very easy to hold and use multi-cutter.

It’s not just all good looks and slim ergonomics, it also packs power, offering you up to 22,000 oscillations per minute from the 300W soft-start motor, controlled by the dual grip.

It’s made to be held and used in a variety of positions, which is exactly the way a good quality oscillating multi-cutter should. It’s your "get out of jail free" power tool, so you want to be able to hold it in a way that suits the application you’re performing, not restricted by poorly thought out industrial design.

Even though the design is compact, DeWALT has included built-in dust extraction compatibility via the hose which fitted next to the quick-change accessory lever. Plug in any of DeWALT’s Airlock system dust extractors and you’ll be left in the sort of unpolluted environment you need to be in, whether you’re grinding tile cement or cutting pipes.

Again, the DCS355 has pulled this design from the corded DWE315.

Power is supplied via DeWALT’s capable and reliable XR lithium-ion packs and the DCS355 is available naked, with 2Ah or 4Ah batteries, depending no your preference.

Run time is expected to be exceptional, not only because DeWALT makes great batteries, but mainly because of the brushless motor. No moving parts in the motor means less heat, less friction, more reliability and less drain on the battery.
