DeWALT DWE6005 Router Trimmer – Why You Need One

The times where a router is the only qualified power tool to get the job done are many and varied, but what about jobs that require the functionality of a router, but without its bulk or power, for example when you want to put a neat little edge moulding, trimming laminates or working with templates.

In those instances, you don’t want – or even need – the bulk and power present in a "fully-sized" router, but you need its functionality to complete these repetitive tasks.

That’s where a tool like DeWALT’s DWE6005 laminate trimmer comes into its own.

However, as you’ll see from our exclusive demo video below, the DWE6005 is much more than "just" a laminate trimmer. Watch the video on Toolstop TV to find out why.

As John explains, the DWE6005 is ideal for chamfering and shaping edges, but with the spindle lock function, you can quickly and easily swap out the cutter and set the trimmer up for using in a door jig when you’re cutting out for hinges, or other similar, repetitive lighter cutting applications.

What’s the Spec of the DeWALT DWE6005?

In terms of the specs on offer, the DWE6005 is a powerful little beast:

  • 600W motor
  • up to 34,000rpm
  • 22mm plunge

And it only outputs 2.5 m/s2 in hand/arm vibration meaning you can use it for ages, getting all of those small, repetitive routing and cutting jobs done during the day.

As stated above, the DWE6005 will plunge to a depth of 22mm, and setting the depth is very simple.

Unlock the collar, which you can see in the image above, then rotate the threaded ring to select the depth you require. Lock it back up and you’re good to go.

It also features some features that you’d typically expect to find on larger routers, such as the 10mm ball bearing copy follower system, which gives you huge precision while you add a moulding to the edge of a worktop, for example. And the D-base incorporates a bright LED light, which coupled with the clear plasticof the base itself, means fantastic visibility while you work, especially if you’re working in a newly built house, for example, where there’s a distinct lack of light!

The rotation of the cutter is controlled via the variable speed dial, which again is great for giving you control over the job you’re doing; it’s all about precision. Simply rotate the while to the speed you require.

And the compact size and low weight of the router – just 1.5kg – makes it perfect for controlled one-handed operation. And the motor is quickly and safely turned off by means of the "bump stop" on/off switch.

Again, this makes one-handed use a breeze. Just bump the top of the router against your chest, for example, to turn it off.

All in all, then, you’re getting so much more for your cash than a laminate trimmer when you buy the DeWALT DWE6005, loads of power, spec and functionality, and ideal for those repetitive applications where a "full grown" router would be overkill.
