Multi-Cutter Saw Blades from Fein – Which Should I Use

Posted by Toolstop Fraser on 1st Jul 2014

Oscillating multi-tools are your “get out of jail free” card on the job site. Perfect for finishing cutting and sanding applications, while being ideal for tasks like removing grout, lifting tiles and much more.

Bathroom and kitchen fitters, joiners, electricians and plumbers are using multi-cutters day in, day out, and as we rely on these tools more and more, it’s important that we understand the best blades to fit to them. Using the correct type of blade for the job we want to do will save us time and cash.

So in this Toolstop Guide we’ll be taking a close look at 4 types of saw blade for oscillating multi-tools made by the German titans of multi-tools, Fein.

The most common category of accessory from Fein is the E Cut.

These accessories are also suitable for anyone owning oscillating multi-tools made by Bosch, Makita, RIDGID and DeWALT.

We asked Fein to give us an overview of the E Cut blades, which you can watch on Toolstop TV by clicking here, or in our player below.

What Saw Blade Accessory Should You Use on Your Multi-Tool?

Fein E Cut Precision Saw Blade

This saw blade benefits from two rows of high-profile teeth, which makes it excellent for cutting hardwoods, chipboard and MDF, especially when you need to make plunge cuts, particularly because of the larger spacing between the blade’s teeth.

The cutting style of this blade is quick and aggressive, however as it doesn’t feature hardened teeth (ie. it’s not a bi-metal saw blade), it doesn’t handle metal well. So be careful when cutting into wood where nails could be present; the teeth with bend and break.

Perfect for:

  • wood up to 50mm
  • plasterboard
  • soft plastics

Fein E Cut Standard Wood Blade

As you can see, the Fein E Cut Standard Wood Blade benefits from finer toothing which will give you a different type of cut of up to 50mm into plasterboard, soft plastics etc. The cuts will be smoother and cleaner, if slower, due to the less aggressive cutting style, compared with the Precision Blade.

It’s a great blade for making clean plunge cuts or for trimming skirting boards or door stops when you’re laying flooring.

Again, as it’s not a bi-metal blade, you need to be careful where nails may be present.

Perfect for:

  • wood up to 50mm
  • plasterboard
  • soft plastics

Fein E Cut Longlife Bi-Metal Wood Blade

This blade benefits from the same cutting face as the E Cut Standard Wood Blade, with the further benefit of being bi-metal, or hardened metal. Fein describe this as a great “all-rounder”, ideal for all the cuts you want to make into soft and hardwood, plus chipboard and MDF, but with the advantage of being able to also cut metal like nails or even trimming copper pipe.

Perfect for:

  • hard and soft wood up to 50mm
  • plasterboard
  • MDF
  • soft plastics
  • hard enough to cut nails and copper pipe

Fein E Cut Universal Blade

Another bi-metal blade with the same cutting face as the E Cut Longlife Blade, however the front cutting edge takes the same form as a hacksaw blade.

It will give you a wider cut of 44mm compared to the standard 35mm of the other blades. The key benefit of this E Cut Blade is that, while it will easily cut wood, it’s perfect for when metal is the main element of the job you’re doing.

ether it’s copper, aluminium, or sheet metal (up to 2mm) that you want to cut, this is the blade you want to attach to your multi-tool.

Perfect for:

  • hard and soft wood up to 50mm
  • plasterboard
  • MDF
  • soft plastics
  • aluminium, copper and sheet metal
