Makita DCS551 Metal Cutting Saw Review

Everything you need to know about the DCS551 Makita Metal Cutting Saw

In our cordless circular saw guide, we included Makita’s DCS551 as it’s not your typical circular saw, designed purely for cutting wood or man-made boards. This particular cordless circular saw has been engineered to cut metal.

This guide reveals the Top 5 Things you need to know about it, and why it should be on your short-list for tools to add to you kit. Watch our video on this model on Toolstop TV:

Is it the Best Metal Cutting Saw?

#1 – It’s Compact, Lightweight But Very Powerful

The reasons to own a cordless circular saw include the ability to work in tight spaces with them, and the DCS551 ticks that particular box. This is a saw that weighs in at just 2.9kg and as you can see from the photo above, it is incredibly compact with an over all length of just 158mm. And much of that is due to #2 on our list…

#2 – It’s Brushless – Longer Runtime, Longer Service Life, More Powerful

Brushless tools have smaller motors allowing for them to be smaller tools over all. That’s the case with the DCS551, and on top of that, the motor runs cooler, draws more power from the battery and will run longer per charge. With no brushes to wear out and need changed, the DCS551 has the toughness you need from a saw designed to cut metal.

#3 – It’s Smart

The motor is protected by Makita’s electronic current limiter, meaning it will work hard without the risk of burning itself out. The RPM of the blade – variable through to 3900rpm – is maintained even under load by Automatic Speed Control. And finally, release the trigger and blade stops immediately due to the electric brake, a fantastic safety feature.

#4 – It Makes the Cuts You Need it to

Thanks to the supplied TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) blade with a diameter of 150mm, you’ll be able to cut through metal up to a depth of 57.5mm.

What is the best saw for Cutting Metal?

#5 – It Comes Body-Only

As this is the type of circular saw you’ll only need to use for very specific metal cutting applications, it makes sense to save a bit of cash at the time of purchase by going for a body-only version. This means that you don’t get a battery or a charger. Simply slot in any of your existing 18V LXT batteries from Makita and you’re ready to run.

That being said, you do get the blade supplied in the box, along with a hex key for blade changes, safety glasses and a type-3 Makpac case to transport it around.
