What are Knipex Cobra Water Pump Pliers?

Water pump pliers are designed to grip nuts and fasteners in many applications. This Toolstop guide explains everything you need to know about Knipex Cobra Pliers, some of the most popular water pump pliers on the market.

The KNIPEX Cobra range ensures you will not waste any more time trying to get pliers to grip. With every KNIPEX Cobra, you simply position the upper jaw onto the workpiece, push the button and you’re all set to go. Like the snake that gave the tool its name, the Cobra’s teeth set against the direction of rotation and have a self-locking effect which prevents slipping on the piece you’re working on.

The Cobra range has a size for every job you can imagine, from the larger 400mm Cobra® XL all the way down to the world’s smallest (and coolest) pliers, the 100mm Cobra XS, there is a Cobra for you.

Which Knipex Water Pump Pliers to use

Which Cobra and when?

KNIPEX launched the Cobra XS (100mm) earlier this year, and it’s already getting a lot of attention. With a gripping capacity of 24mm, this tool really does fit into the palm of your hand, so it’s an everyday carry. You can reach for it for quick jobs like radiators, taps or just those quick tightening-up jobs. By the way, this is a ‘naked’ tool, so there is no covered handle. It looks very retro and very cool.

Going up a size, the 125mm is still pocket sized (but still with 27mm capacity) and a tool to carry everyday, but like the rest of the range, this version has a coated handle for comfort. Moving up to the 150mm (30mm capacity) and 180mm (36mm capacity) versions, you’ll have more leverage and more capability for jobs in awkward spaces and positions, for instance when you’re installing or maintaining boilers.

The 250mm pliers are unsurprisingly the most popular size with all tradespeople as they are a great tool for general maintenance and domestic jobs. These pliers are awesome and look great, too. Finally, moving up to 300mm (60mm capacity) and 400mm (95mm capacity) these are larger pliers used in more industrial settings. The 400mm Cobra XL for instance can grip a 2” pipe fitting and weighs 50% less than a 2” pipe wrench, which has a much lower gripping capacity.
