We’ve raved about it for months now, and it seems certain that the evolution from corded power tools to cordless is well underway. While we’re waiting to learn about the Bosch power tools that will fully benefit from the new EneRacer batteries (see them here), Dewalt is continuing to roll out professional cordless power tools boasting 54v brushless motors.
In this guide we’ll look at the spec, the features and the benefits of the Dewalt DCH333 54V Brushless XR FLEXVOLT 3-mode SDS Rotary Hammer.

There are currently two models available to add to your kit. Click here to see the DCH333NT version, which is “naked” or body-only. That means you don’t get any XR FlexVolt batteries, but the hammer is supplied in a T-STAK tough carry case with a foam inlay and a removable tote tray.
The higher-end kit, the DCH333X2, comes in the same T-STAK case, but is bundled with a multi-volt charger and TWO 54v XR FlexVolt batteries.
A couple of things are worth noting about this particular kit.
First off, the multi-volt charger will handle any of the XR batteries you may already have in your kit. Secondly, the XR FlexVolt batteries supplied are the new 9Ah versions, which means they have 33% more charge capacity than the “first gen” 6Ah packs.
A note on the capacity of the batteries, just so that things are as clear as possible.
The stated capacity (9Ah) only applies to the when the battery is used in an 18v tool. When slotted into any 54v tools expect around 2Ah charge capacity. However, as 54v motor require less draw on the charge, you still get phenomenal runtime.
For example, Dewalt assures us that the DCH333 will easily drill up to 66 18mm Ø x 80mm holes per charge. Which is brilliant.
Raw drilling capacity is:
- Max. Drilling Capacity [Concrete]: 30 mm
- Max. Drilling Capacity [Wood]: 30 mm
- Max. Drilling Capacity [Metal]: 13 mm
To punch those holes into masonry the drill offers up to 4,480 blows per minutewhile the chuck spins up to 1000rpm via the variable speed trigger.
All of the features you’d expect a high-end SDS rotary hammer to have are here, from rotation stop to set you up for chiseling applications, to the brushless motor. Going brushless ensures phenomenal service life and the motor is less likely to succumb to the typical knocks and bumps experienced by a rotary hammer. And at the base of the tool, pointing up towards the SDS chuck, is a bright, white LED job light to brighten up even the darkest corner of the job site.

Clearly the main benefit of owning a rotary hammer like this is the corded performance, but you’re relying on battery power. This makes it the ideal addition for any of you who are already adding 54v batteries to you kit with the view to working as cordlessly as possible.
Working high up on scaffold, “miles” away from the generator or a power supply? The DCH333 is for you. Working on a new build and the power still isn’t switched on (primarily because you’re the spark responsible for running the cables)? The DCH333 will sort you right out.
Or if you’re a plumber who just likes to have the flashiest tools on site, then the DCH333 is for you!
The spec of the hammer makes it the perfect power tool for drilling anchors from and fixings 4mm to 30mm into concrete, brick and masonry.
In terms of performance, the numbers above are epic for a battery-powered SDS rotary hammer, and the great numbers continue in terms of hand/arm vibration. Dewalt’s published numbers of 8.5m/s² put it firmly in the “best in class” category.
From a design point of view, Dewalt has worked hard to counter-act the weight increase experienced by slotting a 9Ah battery into a tool that most of us will never have used a cordless version before. They’ve kept it as compact as possible, and the weight is sitting around 4kg mark, balancing performance with comfortable ergonomics.
The DCH333X2 and the DCH333NT both qualify for Toolstop Finance, starting from as little as 6 monthly repayments of £66.67, with 0% interest. Click here to learn more about our finance packages.
We’re certainly excited by the launch of this fantastic SDS rotary hammer, and to see the cordless revolution press forward in 2017!
