Why Women Should Consider Learning a Trade

Posted by Katy | Toolstop on 4th Mar 2022

There are many reasons why women should pursue a career in the trade. We think far more women should consider learning a trade. Learn why in our blog

Why Should Women Consider Working in Skilled Trades?

There's a lot of stigma surrounding women in the trade, and often a stereotypical image associated with tradesworkers. Despite this, there are many reasons why women should pursue a career in this industry.

New research has revealed that a record number of builders, plumbers and plasterers are now female, making up about 6% of the industry. This is fantastic news for future generations of women in trade.

Manual trade jobs have been around for years, and this will ALWAYS be the case. There is always going to be a demand for electricians, builders, plumbers and other trades.

We think far more women should consider learning a trade. Here’s why:

No degree necessary

A degree isn't always required to get you into the trades. You can often learn the skills you need via an apprenticeship, which allows you to be paid whilst you learn! With this, comes little to no student debt!

Career progression

There is opportunity for quick career progression. Most apprenticeships take just a few years to complete and after that, the world is your oyster! Working in the trades gives you ample opportunity to climb the ladder to a more senior role, and then eventually start out on your own if this is something that interests you. Your skills will be highly sought after.

High demand

There's always going to be work for people in the trades. This type of manual work is in significant demand and always will be.

Healthy salary

We've took a look at some of the average salaries for skilled tradespeople in the UK. (Please note, salaries can vary according to location, employer etc.) If you decide to set up on your own later down the line, you can expect to earn even more!

Electrician: £32,000 🔌

Plumber: £30,000 👨‍🔧

Bricklayer: £31,000 🧱

Should Women Consider Joining a Trade?

We openly encourage woman to get into a skilled trade.

The UK is currently experiencing a shortage of qualified tradespeople across a range of industries, and by learning a trade, you will gain skills that will serve you a lifetime. Careers in this industry are indeed available to women and we 100% encourage anyone to do so.

No matter your race, gender, age, or existing level of skill, you can become a tradesperson!
