How to Replace the Chuck on a Makita Drill

This Toolstop guide has been designed solely to show you the quickest and easiest way to change the chuck on a drill.

You will need:

  • Allen Key
  • Spanner
  • Optional vice (makes unscrewing easier)

Derek Wenham of Makita walks us through the process of replacing the chuck on our corded drills, but be sure to keep reading for an easy step by step guide:

How to Change a Drill Chuck

Follow these 3 easy steps to remove a drill chuck:

1. If there is a screw in the centre of the chuck, uncrew this. If not, you can go straight in with your Allen Key. Simply insert it into the front of the chuck, same way you would if you were inserting a drill bit, and clamp it in place.

2. Take your spanner to the back of the chuck and then undo it. This can be done either in a vice or by hand

3. Use the allen key to spin and remove the chuck from the shaft

Its as simple as that!

To replace the chuck on a drill:

1. Screw the chuck back onto the shaft

2. Tighten the back of the chuck with your spanner

3. Put the screw back into the chuck if it had one
