Modelled on Albert Kaufmann’s wife’s sewing machine, the jigsaw is one of the quintessential power tools, whether we choose cordless or stick with the more traditional corded variety.
Going corded for our jigsaw has some obvious benefits:
- non-stop power
- more power
In this instance we’re going to look at the latest professional corded jigsaw from Bosch, the GST140 BCE Professional, with a 720W motor, providing you with 240v of power.
In plain English, this jigsaw is a beast.
Thankfully, though, Bosch has also packed out the GST140BCE with as many features as it has power.
Quite simply, a powerful jigsaw is worthless if it’s uncontrollable. It really is that simple. An extremely powerful jigsaw that has the capacity to cut through thick, hard materials quickly can also be hard to control. Bosch realises this and has put checks and balances in place on the GST140 BCE to provide you with a corded jigsaw that handle the jobs you throw at it, while remain completely within your control.
This control is provided in the following ways:
- 2 roller guide systems which prevent blade drift or bend. This means that the blade will firmly hold to the line you’re cutting and not start to drift across the material you’re cutting
- double lock on the blade, coupled with the Bosch tool-free, secure-fitting saw blade changing system (SDS) which will prevent the saw blade from wobbling to ensure maximum surface quality. In other words, cleaner cuts without losing power
- variable speed trigger which which allows you to have complete control over the speed of the blade
- a speed dial allowing you to set the top speed of the blade
- Constant Electronics is like the cruise control system in your car and controls the speed produced by the 720W motor
Comfort as well as control
Using a high-powered tool like the GST140BCE Professional jigsaw could be an uncomfortable experience, particularly in terms of vibration and dust. After all, we’re dealing with a high powered motor, moving a blade in an orbital action at extremely high speeds through hard materials. This means the jigsaw will vibrate a lot and kick up a lot of dust
However, thanks to Bosch’s anti-vibration technology, vibration levels are within the guidelines, with the GST140 BCE Professional producing 7.0 m/s². It’s also been rated A for noise levels. This means in terms of vibration and noise, you’re within the safety levels.
Dust is also a consideration, for a couple of reasons.
Obviously, clearing the dust away from your cutting line is important, not just for the accuracy of cut, but for safety. The GST 140BCE has dust blower at the front to clear the dust while you cut.
But secondly, and probably more importantly health-wise, the GST140 BCE Professional has a dust port on the rear to which you can attach a dust extractor. The unique selling point of this system is the flexibility of the extraction pipe; it moves idependent of the jigsaw meaning you can keep it clear of your cut and position it as you see fit while you cut.
This is especially useful when you’re cutting curves or corners.
Another great feature is the SDS tool-free system for fitting and removing the blades. No tools required – obviously – and this has real benefits if the blade jams or after cutting hard materials. The blade will be hot, but you don’t need to touch it, simply flick the level and the blade will eject automatically.
Adjustable all the way
Pendulum action on a jigsaw is probably no longer a luxury. It’s a must-have feature. As explained on our cordless jigsaw buying guide, the term “pendulum” describes the orbital movement of the jigsaw blade. Rather than simply moving up and down, the blade also moves backwards and forwards.
The action of moving backs and forwards, as well as up and down, means that the blade will always be cutting fresh material, which in turns means a faster cut, even through very hard materials.
The GST140 BCE has 4 stages of pendulum action and a cutting stroke of 26mm.
Another adjustable feature of the GST 140 BCE Professional is the baseplate. Rather than having to use tools tweak the angle of the baseplate, simply flip the lever on the side and move the spring loaded baseplate to the angle you want to cut, up to 45 degrees either side, then lock it off again.
At the business end of the jigsaw Bosch has fitted twin LED lights which are controlled independent of the trigger, so you get to choose when you use them or not.
Of course, getting the absolute best from your jigsaw is heavily influenced by the blades you use. So be sure to refer to our jigsaw blade buying guide to make sure you choose the correct blade for the applicaiton you’re undertaking.
All in all, then, we think the Bosch GST 140 BCE Professional jigsaw is a belter. No, it’s not lithium-ion powered. It’s a good, “old fashioned” corded jigsaw that packs loads of power, but balances that power with excellent control within the motor, at the trigger and at the blade. Dust and vibration are also taken care of.
